Samsung QD-OLED Wins ‘Display of the Year’ at DIAs 2023
The Society for Information Display named Samsung QD-OLED ‘Display of the Year’ at the Display Industry Awards. Find out why it’s a worthy winner.
Samsung’s QD-OLED Display was one of the winners of ‘Display of the Year’ at the Society for Information Display’s (SID) 29th Annual Display Industry Awards (DIA) 2023.
The prestigious award, jointly given to Jade Bird Display, was unveiled during SID’s highly anticipated Display Week at the Los Angeles Convention Center (May 23 – May 25, 2023). The accolade is given to display products with the most significant technological advances or outstanding features — one of which was the Samsung QD-OLED.
Why winning a Display Industry Award matters
This isn’t just any ‘Display of the Year’ award — it’s a DIA ‘Display of the Year’ award. Now in its 29th year, the DIAs are highly respected in the industry. And the organizational body behind it has even more history, with SID championing display technology since 1962.
SID is the only professional organization focused on visual information and display technologies. The society encourages collaboration across the industry and champions innovation. Display Week is SID’s annual symposium, seminar, exhibition, and tradeshow that brings together industry leaders from across the globe. To be recognized by its expert members as a DIA winner is an honor and a sign that the industry recognizes how impressive the Samsung QD-OLED is.
Why Samsung QD-OLED won ‘Display of the Year’
‘Display of the Year’ is the most coveted award at the DIAs. It’s given to displays that demonstrate outstanding innovation.
We’re incredibly proud to be a winner and excited to share the celebrated technology with you. Samsung QD-OLED is a groundbreaking technology that will transform how home gaming and entertainment is enjoyed.
Some of the features that helped Samsung QD-OLED pick up the award include:
Innovation
The DIAs celebrate innovation — and Samsung QD-OLED certainly ticks this box. QD-OLED technology uniquely combines the benefits of quantum dots and organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) to provide an immersive viewing experience.
QD-OLED has red and green quantum dot material printed on each pixel, which works in harmony with blue light self-emitting pixels and an oxide thin-film transistor (TFT) backplane. This is all packaged together in a sophisticated three-layer structure that makes slim design aesthetics possible while achieving exceptional performance.
How’s that for innovation?
Unparalleled color performance
With millions of quantum dot pixels, the Samsung QD-OLED can produce the widest range of colors available on current displays.
The result? Cinematic images with life-like colors replicated in your living room.
Technically speaking, the QD-OLED impressed with the ability to create more than 90 percent coverage of BT.2020 and a huge 99 percent of the Digital Cinema Initiatives’ DCI-P3 color space. To learn more, visit our article on the quantum color experience.
Unrivaled picture quality
The QD-OLED wows with its stunning picture quality.
Its Experienced Color Range (XCR) is brighter than contemporary displays at the same luminance level. Alongside the brighter luminance, the Samsung QD-OLED also creates inkier blacks. When measuring against conventional mini-LED LCDs, the QD-OLED provides the lowest measurable black level of 0.0005 nits. QD-OLED can therefore produce a true black that conventional mini-LED LCDs are incapable of.
Plus, an infinite contrast ratio means QD-OLED also provides an extended high dynamic range (HDR) experience for a mesmerizing viewing experience.
The ability to see everything
Samsung QD-OLED enables you to watch films as the director intended and play video games as the developer envisioned.
Thanks to its dome-shaped flux structure and being a top-layer emission display, there’s no such thing as a bad seat in the house. So wherever you’re sitting, you can appreciate the excellent visuals. Eighty percent of its luminance is maintained even when 60 degrees off-axis, keeping colors life-like from different angles.
As well as helping you see everything, the Samsung QD-OLED also enables you to see things faster. Its response time is a super speedy 0.1 milliseconds. This can give you a competitive edge when gaming, as every millisecond can make a difference. Plus, the fast response time reduces motion blur, which eases the strain on your eyes.
The exciting wide product range
The Samsung QD-OLED may have won ‘Display of the Year,’ but it’s actually several different displays, with the technology available in various sizes.
The range includes Samsung QD-OLED TVs in 55”, 65” and 77” and QD-OLED monitors in 34” and 49”.
