An Advanced Color Model for Evaluating New Display Technologies

Luminance is limited as a brightness measure for electronic displays. Samsung Display’s Luke Hellwig and Dale Stolitzka explain the need for an advanced color model.

An Advanced Color Model for Evaluating New Display Technologies

Luminance is commonly used as a brightness measure. However, it’s often flawed when used to compare electronic displays because luminance under-predicts the brightness of chromatic stimuli. To improve measurement, scientists need to agree on a reliable way of predicting this brightness.

In a paper for Information Display, the official magazine of the Society for Information Display, Samsung Display America Lab’s Luke Hellwig and Dale Stolitzka make a case for how eXperienced Color Range (XCR) can help scientists better understand chromatic stimuli’s brightness. In turn, this will also help consumers make more informed decisions when choosing an electronic display.
